Construction Firm's Future Is All Good Thanks To ICT Rebuild

Illawarra based Allfab Constructions is a privately owned general construction and maintenance contractor. It specialises in infrastructure development, steel fabrication, constructions and plant maintenance. From small beginnings with a handful of employees, Allfab has grown to employ more than 100 full time staff plus additional contract workers. It has clocked a history of large scale, multi-million dollar projects including grain silos in Leeton, Parliament House Canberra, cable tunnels, high rise buildings and major works within Bluescope Steel Port Kembla.

Allfab's high standards of safety, quality and client service are major factors in the company's success. Maintaining these standards requires efficient, real-time communication and information flow across all projects. When the performance of Allfab's information and communications systems starting falling below peak, advice was sought from trusted ICT partner Novo IT.


Business Problem

"There were a number of signs that our ICT needed updating," says Joe Gafa, IT Manager at Allfab.

Email services were slow, with data storage at the limit. Network performance and stability were no longer where they needed to be, which strained productivity. Remote access to Allfab's network was unreliable, and was an obstacle to strategically important communication and information flow.

Because our hardware was old and didn't support the latest versions of business critical applications, new features and capabilities were out of reach," says Gafa

"Allfab has grown from strength to strength, and our ICT was no longer serving our needs. We needed more capacity to drive current and future business objectives."


Novo IT Solution

Novo IT's Managed Services Team - having provided support to Allfab's internal IT Team for several years - were on the ready with baseline server stability and performance reports. It also documented end user issues and common faults. Novo IT's Consulting Team hosted two workshops with business and IT leaders to clarify Allfab's business goals and systems needs, before proceeding to solution design.

Novo IT recommended a virtualised server platform using VMware technology, to optimise the utilisation of server capacity. It is a cost-efficient way to provide scaleable capacity to meet Allfab's growing needs, without needing to purchase, store and maintain multiple physical servers.  

"Further cost savings were created with a more secure and environmentally friendly setup of our server room," says Gafa.

The latest in Windows server technology future proofs Allfab's email and data management. Microsoft Exchange delivers robust and secure email services, with storage issues a thing of the past. Microsoft SQL Server delivers powerful database management. Novo IT converted Allfab's in-house developed applications to SQL, to enhance availability and reliability of applications. All users can now access these business critical applications from any device, courtesy of Citrix Xenapp 6.5.

Novo IT's Professional Services Team implemented the solution using Microsoft best practices.

"The transition was made seamless by having the old and new systems running in parallel," says Gafa.

Novo IT's Managed Services Team was engaged to provide ongoing management of the new infrastructure.


Client Outcomes

With a robust and reliable virtualised server platform, concerns about capacity are resolved and business confidence is restored. Email services operate efficiently, with no more storage issues. All users, both desktop and remote, enjoy a far more productive and user-friendly interface. They now have access to the business network anytime and anywhere, on any device, with the very latest versions of business critical applications.

Gafa says, "The infrastructure overhaul supports our current and future business goals. Our information and communications systems are now top notch."
